About Us

Who We Are

The Access to Sports Project is a community‑led sports development charity dedicated to increasing and sustaining participation in sport and physical activity across the London boroughs of Islington, Hackney, and Haringey. We focus on creating opportunities for people of all ages — especially those facing disadvantage — to get active, build skills, and grow confidence through sport.

Founded in 2002, the Project started in the Finsbury Park regeneration area and has grown into a trusted organisation with a strong track record of delivering sports programmes, coach education, and leadership development. Today we employ a team of dedicated staff and sessional coaches who work across community venues, parks, housing estates, and open spaces.

Our Mission

We use sport as a tool for change — improving health and wellbeing, developing life skills, strengthening communities, and creating pathways into volunteering, training, and employment. We believe that everyone should have access to the benefits of sport, regardless of background or circumstance.

What We Do

Community Sports Activities

We deliver accessible and affordable sports sessions for young people and adults — including weekly activities, holiday programmes, competitions, and inclusive sports formats — designed to encourage participation, build confidence, and support wellbeing.

Coach Education & Leadership

Our Coach Education and Leadership Programme equips local people with nationally recognised qualifications in sports leadership, coaching, refereeing, and volunteer development. These qualifications help participants progress into employment, volunteering roles, and community leadership opportunities.

Events & Engagement

We organise community sports events, festivals, competitions, and outreach activities that bring people together and promote active lifestyles.

Support for Local Groups

We provide support and capacity building for community sports groups and voluntary organisations, helping them deliver high‑quality, inclusive sport and activity.

Our Values

Inclusion – We open doors to sport for everyone, including people from minority ethnic backgrounds, those with disabilities, and those experiencing economic disadvantage.
Empowerment – We help individuals build confidence, leadership skills, and pathways to employment and volunteering.
Community Strength – We use sport to foster social connection, cohesion, and a sense of belonging.
Health & Wellbeing – We promote active lifestyles that support physical and mental health.

Our Impact

Over the years, we have delivered free and low‑cost sports sessions, coach training, leadership courses, and community engagement programmes, supporting thousands of people across London’s diverse neighbourhoods. Many participants go on to volunteer, pursue further education, or find employment in sport and community roles.

Why Sport Matters

Sport can be a life‑changing experience. It builds physical fitness, mental resilience, friendships, discipline, and leadership — helping young people and adults reach their potential both on and off the field.

Our overarching aims are to:

  1. Provide training, support and volunteer opportunities for local people enabling them to become involved in sports coaching.
  2. Organise a range of accessible and progressive sports activities for young people.
  3. Provide support and assistance to local organisations interested in delivering sports.

We are also committed to:

  • Improving health– through a range of sporting and physical activities, providing children and young people with the physical literacy and skills, which will remain throughout their lives.
  • Reducing crime– by providing constructive and creative activities sensitive to the needs of young people who are involved in, or are at risk of being involved in, anti social behaviour and crime.
  • Increasing social inclusion– by providing opportunities for participation by males and females, people from minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities and people who are economically disadvantaged.
  • Developing People – by using sport as the vehicle for building self-confidence, learning/ improving skills and abilities, working as part of a team and moving people on to access wider provision.
  • Building Communities – promoting social cohesion through volunteering and shared activity.
  • Increasing employment – through the operation of new opportunities and the delivery of vocational qualifications.
